Poker That's a Piece of Cake Cake Poker, who started up in 2004 and launched in 2005, put themselves together as one of the best-looking new sites on the market. Their traffic remains relatively low, but the positive to their relative unpopularity is that you can almost always find lots of open tables and enough soft players to make an easy run for a few extra dollars in play. They offer pretty run-of-the-mill games-- the home site only mentions Omaha and Hold 'Em, though they do offer HI/Lo Omaha and have both fixed and no-limit options-- but make up for their lack of game variety in the particularly easy set-up and cutting-edge graphics on the play sites. As the name might suggest, Cake has built an early reputation for having very, very soft, very sweet players. They seem to get onto the site because of the aesthetic value in the page displays. That's fine. In fact,t hat's better for those of us who thrive on kettles full of fish on which to feed. This sort of a site also give the novice players a chance to hone in their basic skills on the play money tables, then transition to the real money as they gain confidence. They offer 24 hour e-mail support, a comprehensive (and amazingly common-sense-driven) help section, and a regularly updated “Known Issues” portion of the site that's unparalleled by most of the sites I've had the good fortune to play. (Incidentally, the current “known issues” deal with problems experienced through Windows Vista and general Microsoft-owned e-mail accounts, so make sure that you have the needed service packs before you download the software.) Those of us running on Mac or Linux-based systems will have to get a Microsoft-compatible engine (like Wine, for instance) through which to run it, but should have no problems once these precautions are addressed. The Cake site has a few obvious advantages and a few glaring issues, depending upon what sort of a player you are. On the one hand, the relative newness of the site makes for lots of soft play, open tables, and features within their play money sections (like a note-taking option on other players' actions) that could prove to be very helpful to newbie poker players. On the other hand, unless you absolutely revel in gutting fish after fish, the lack of savvy in many of the players might tend to set off your boredom and prompt you to start playing a much looser game that will bite you when you go to sites with stronger bases. The gorgeous layout, though, is worth a look any day of the week, and you just might be able to use their notoriously soft players to pad your accounts in other places. |
